Lunch with Kafka
I’m fixing a sandwich in the kitchen when he comes in,
Dark hair, skinny, already coughing.
His English isn’t so good, and I don’t speak German
Or Yiddish, but that doesn’t seem to matter.
Because I’m just starting to put mustard on two slices
Of whole wheat bread, I gesture to it with my head,
Sort of a sideways nod, and he smiles and shakes his
Head up and down, universal sign for “Yes, please.”
All I have is sliced turkey and cheese, but
Dead people aren’t picky eaters. I get out two
Plates and put a sandwich on each. He helps me
Carry them to the table. There’s so much I want to ask,
But I don’t think he’s here to answer questions. The
First time I try—Why did you want all those stories
Burned?—he just looks at me and shrugs. Maybe
He didn’t understand, or maybe he means he doesn’t know,
Or maybe the answer is too complicated. I try again,
Franz, did you see it all coming: the war, the burning cities,
The Nazis? This time, he looks serious, but
He still doesn’t speak. Instead, he gets up from the
Table and walks to the kitchen to boil some water.
I watch him make us both tea. How does he know where
Everything is, the cups, the teapot, even the sugar?
Then, he brings it all back and pours a cup for me and
One for him. His hands warm themselves against the
Porcelain. His shoulders drop down a little as he sits,
His elbows just off the table, and I get the message.
There’s not much we can do for each other. Do
Whatever you can.
Almuerzo con Kafka
Él entra en la cocina cuando preparo un sándwich,
Con pelo oscuro y delgado, ya tose.
Su inglés no es muy bueno y yo no hablo alemán,
O yiddish, pero eso no parece importar. Como
Apenas empiezo a untar mostaza en dos tajadas
De pan integral, con una cierta inclinación lateral
De cabeza, se lo señalo, él sonríe y mueve la cabeza
De arriba a abajo, señal universal de “Sí por favor”.
Yo sólo tengo pavo y queso en tajadas,
Pero los muertos no son caprichosos para comer.
Saco dos platos, pongo un sándwich en cada uno.
Él me ayuda a llevarlos a la mesa. Tengo tantas
Cosas para preguntarle, pero no creo que él esté aquí
Para contestar preguntas. Lo primero que intento es:
– ¿Por qué querías que quemaran todos esos cuentos?
Él sólo me mira y se encoge de hombros. Tal vez
No entiende, tal vez quiere decir que no lo sabe,
O quizás la respuesta es muy difícil. Lo intento otra vez:
“Franz, ¿Presentías que todo aquello pasaría, la guerra,
Las ciudades en llamas, los nazis? Esta vez parece serio,
Pero todavía no habla. En cambio, se levanta de la mesa
Y va hasta la cocina a hervir agua. Yo lo miro hacer té
Para ambos. ¿Cómo sabe dónde está cada cosa,
Las tazas, la tetera, inclusive el azúcar?
Luego lo trae todo y sirve una taza de té para mí
Y otra para él. Las manos se le entibian
Contra la porcelana. Los hombros le descienden
Un poco al sentarse, los codos apenas
Sobresalen de la mesa, y yo entiendo el mensaje:
No podemos hacer gran cosa el uno por el otro.
Haga lo que pueda.

George Franklin’s most recent collection, Traveling for No Good Reason, won the Sheila-Na-Gig Editions competition and was published in 2018. A bilingual collection, Among the Ruins / Entre las ruinas, translated by Ximena Gomez was also published in 2018 by Katakana Editores, and individual poems have appeared in various journals, including Into the Void, The Threepenny Review, Salamander, Pedestal Magazine, The Ekphrastic Review, and Cagibi. A broadside from Broadsided Press is forthcoming in June 2019. Spanish translations of his poetry have appeared in Nagari, Alastor, Raíz invertida, Conexos y Carátula. He also practices law in Miami, where he is the general counsel for Exchange for Change and teaches poetry workshops in Florida state prisons.

Ximena Gómez is a psychologist, a poet and a translator. She is Colombian and lives in Miami. Her poems have appeared in several magazines in Spanish, such as Nagari, Conexos, Círculo de Poesía, Carátula, Raíz Invertida, Ligeia and Espacio poético 4. Her poetry has been published bilingually (English-Spanish) in Sheila-Na-Gig, Cigar City Journal, Cagibi, where she received a nomination for a 2018 Best of the Net award, and in an forthcoming edition of The Laurel Review. Her collection «Habitación con Moscas» was published by Editorial Torremozas (Madrid 2016) and her fiction appeared in the “New Anthology of Poetry and Fiction of the XXI Century,” Lord Byron Ediciones (Madrid 2017).
